The role holder will act as a Tax Manager within the Group Tax Strategy & Planning team ('GTSP') and report to the US Senior Tax Manager of GTSP. This position will support the US Senior Tax Manager in the development of tax strategy and planning activities for AstraZeneca's US and Latin American businesses in line with Group Tax Strategy. The role holder will work closely with the Global Tax Team and wider AstraZeneca business on domestic as well as international projects, including transfer pricing management, M&A work, structuring projects, and licensing deals. The role holder will lead on certain tax projects including creation and development of tax planning ideas. Background of AstraZeneca and Global Tax organisation AstraZeneca is a major international healthcare business engaged in the research, development, manufacture and marketing of prescription pharmaceuticals and the supply of healthcare services. The Global Tax team is part of the Group Finance function and is organised into two teams: GTSP (Group Tax Strategy & Planning) and GTO (Global Tax Operations), which work closely together and currently include personnel based in the UK, Sweden and the United States. The Global Tax Team is recognised both externally and internally as a high performing team. The GTSP team, consisting of 12 tax professionals, is responsible for development and execution of tax strategy and planning initiatives through establishing appropriate tax policies and standards, IP management, effective cross border dispute management and business partnering. Key accountabilities

  • Act as Tax Manager within the US GTSP team of 4 tax professionals that conduct research & planning, transfer pricing management and compliance, M&A work, structuring projects and licensing deals as well as other projects as required.
  • Lead on certain tax strategy and planning projects including creation and development of tax planning ideas in response to business needs, group structure efficiency and changing tax environment.
  • The role holder will assist the Senior Tax Manager in providing US tax support related to prospective licensing transactions, collaborations with other pharmaceutical partners, acquisitions or divestitures through review of proposals and contracts, as required. This includes outline of tax efficient solutions and IP management and may also include conducting tax due diligence for acquisitions.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships, with other parts of Global Finance e.g. business partnering. Ensure close coordination and communication with the business, the Global Tax Team, and outside advisors, as required.
  • Management of US transfer pricing and other markets as required including to ensure that all entities have adequate transfer pricing documentation and that other TP compliance requirements are met. The responsibility will also include management of transfer pricing disputes including APA's and MAP's as required and to provide strategic guidance regarding tax and business efficient supply chains.
  • Assist the US Senior Tax Manager in development of tax strategy for the LatAm region aligned with the Global Commercial organization in the Americas and also manage day to day support provided to local teams in LatAm in line with centrally mandated policies and procedures. This will include, amongst other things, transfer pricing and tax audit management.
  • Determine US borrowing capacity and terms, considering Sec 163(j) limitations, debt to equity ratio required for legal purposes, earnings capacity and good tax payer reputation. Manage and review the timely completion of the Sec 163(j) compliance prepared by GTSP.
  • Assist the Senior Tax Manager with tax advice regarding distributions from US entities.
  • Assist HR and Payroll with various domestic and international employee tax issues.
  • Assist GTO with tax technical advice regarding audit requests and other requests such as Statements and Elections needed for the Federal Tax Returns, especially those related to any new transactions closed during the year. Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in accounting, business administration, or economics. Alternatively, the role holder will have a Law Degree (LL.M).
  • In-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, tax accounting, and tax law acquired through positions as a tax accountant, tax attorney and/or tax agent in industry or government employment.
  • Prior experience with M&A transactions, transfer pricing and experience of handling tax audit matters.
  • In-depth knowledge of US tax laws. Prior international experience from working with tax laws in the LatAm region, UK or Sweden is a plus.
  • 5 years experience in tax, finance or accounting at a large corporation or accounting firm.
