Computer Support Technician

Front-line technician responsible for diagnosing, triaging, solving IT issues, supporting end users, training end users, deploying, securing, and maintaining a fleet of computers.

Essential Job Functions
  • Deploy and replace mobile data terminals, workstation personal computers, business class computers, laptops, tablets, peripherals, and monitors.


  • Configure hardware with correct settings and software and migrate needed data from the old device. Train users on new features.

  • Diagnose user issues, triage, create trouble tickets and engage staff and resources to resolve quickly.

  • Provide technology support to resolve hardware and software issues for computers, networks, telephones, printers, multiple types of displays, and personal data devices.

  • Provide technology support to all departments for computer, network, data, telecommunications, and print functions.

  • Track recurring computer issues and issue resolution processes. Track computer and software licensing inventory.

  • Create and maintain installation instructions for specialized hardware and software installations.

Ancillary Job Functions
  • Assist with the analysis of end-user technology needs and researching new computer hardware and software.


  • Assist with the research and cost analysis of new computer hardware or software.

  • Create and update standard operating procedures to document how specific pieces of software, hardware, and peripherals are deployed for use by the end user.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.


  • IT-related technical certifications or equivalent experience in the field is preferred.

  • Minimum of one year of related experience and A+ certification are preferred.

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

  • Must be able to pass a standard police background check.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position
  • Knowledge of installing and troubleshooting mobile data terminals, workstation personal computers, business class computers, laptops, tablets, peripherals, and monitors.


  • Proficiency with Microsoft Operating Systems and all versions of Microsoft Office suites.

  • Knowledge of Google Office Suites – Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Forms, Slides, and Sites.

  • Proficiency with Android OS and Apple iOS systems, antivirus software implementation and support, API systems, client and server maintenance, and Linux-based hardware and software recovery tools.

  • Understanding of Microsoft Active Directory and using group policy implementation and maintenance.

  • Basic knowledge of network protocols and server administration.

  • Strong sense of professionalism to maintain confidentiality of computer files and City information.

  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to train users.

  • Ability to work in a team environment.

  • Ability to diagnose a problem and utilize effective resources to resolve it.

  • Ability to follow outlined procedures.

  • Ability to work on-call and respond within 30 minutes at all hours of the day/night.


Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job
  • General office conditions. Exposed to moderate noise levels.

  • Regularly required to talk, listen and sit; frequently required to explain computer hardware or software issues.

  • Must be able to have repetitive wrist, precise hand-eye coordination, and/or finger movement to type and work on computer.

  • Must have finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination to work on computers, telephones, and related office equipment.

  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds and physically transport computer hardware.

  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
