PRIMARY FUNCTION: To serve as receptionist and triage person to facilitate the clerical and clinical functions of the Surgery/Trauma outpatient clinical practice; assi st physicians in examining and treating patients by performing clinical and clerical tasks; and assist in the delivery of quality pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient care utilizing principles of excellent customer service and Christiana Care Values

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform front office receptionist duties: greet patients/visitors; answer phones and triage calls, as needed; schedule patient appointments, tests and operative procedures for surgeons/APN; collect patient-related demographic and insurance information; collect office fees and co-payments and document appropriately Provide backup support to clerk by assembling patient charts and filing laboratory/consultation reports and correspondence Obtain insurance pre-certifications/pre-authorizations for surgical procedures and prescribed medical supplies/equipment and communicate status to appropriate Billing representative Obtain insurance referrals and documen ts status in electronic medical records Writes, mails and files appointment “no show” letters Verifies that patient appointments are posted in electronic medical records and physicians' Outlook calendars Print and sort operative, radiographic and laboratory reports from Power Chart, steer information to surgeon/APN for review, as necessary and file in correct patient chart Assist patients to examination rooms and act as chaperon, as necessary; measure and record patients' vital signs and collect patient data; prepare patients for examination/minor surgical procedures Assist physicians/APN with examination of and/or minor surgical procedures for pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients Perform minor dressing changes under direction/supervision of surgeon/APN Process all specimens for transport to laboratory Contact patients prior to and following surgical procedures, communicate information to surgeon/APN to enable identification of appropriate measures to supp ort optimum health outcomes Assist with medication refills (pain/infection) under the direction/supervision of surgeon/APN Clean, disinfect and store equipment after use and prepare surgical instrument sets for prompt sterilization Inventory and maintain stock of all medical supplies; order supplies, as necessary Respond to all medical record requests from attorneys, patients and physician offices; coordinate other legal requests with physicians; maintain system for tracking release of outpatient medical records and payments received for copying records, depositions, narratives, etc.; prepare all disability and FMLA forms for physician/APN review and signature Maintain required credentials of CPR and mandatory inservice education programs Understand and utilize effective interpersonal communication skills and principles of customer service Perform assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; report to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors Perform other duties as required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High school graduate or equivalent
Completion of a medical assistant training program
Current CPR certificate
Two years physician/clinic office experience preferred
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted
