This Office of the General Counsel position supports the company's consumer lending and banking business on matters at Sallie Mae's headquarters in Newark, Delaware. Primary responsibilities include provide legal advice and counsel to Sallie Mae Bank and Sallie Mae's consumer lending business, including private education loans, on applicable laws and regulations. The position will advise the business as to the impact of these! laws and regulations on all aspects of consumer lending inclu! ding product development, marketing, underwriting and servicing of lending products, as well as support banking generally. Specific responsibilities include reviewing marketing materials, customer agreements, legal disclosures, and advising on marketing and new product development. Interface with regulators as needed. Provide legal support to exam management, compliance and audit teams. Participate in numerous project planning meetings, communicate regularly with internal counsel to ensure consistency of guidance, review risks of new products and assess regulation applicability, liaise with outside counsel, manage and mentor other in-house counsel. The incumbent of this position will have frequent contact with clients at all levels of the organization.
Must Have:
- Top credentials and 10+ years of relevant law firm, in-house (financial services/bank), or regulatory experience is required.
- Extensive knowledge of and experience advising on ! laws applicable to Banking and Consumer Finance including the TILA, ECOA, FCRA, UDAAP/UDAP, TISA, , Sections 23A/B, CRA, GLBA and other privacy laws, as well as advertising and marketing laws including CAN-SPAM Act, TCPA, TSR is required.
- Strong legal/financial/business acumen and ability to work effectively and multitask successfully in fast-paced and complex business environment. Prior dealings with regulatory agencies such as the FDIC and the CFPB, is highly desirable.
- The ideal candidate is a hard-working self-starter with excellent attention to detail, thrives in a fast-paced, energetic and entrepreneurial environment, and has excellent problem solving, interpersonal, teamwork, writing, negotiation, and client communication skills.
- Juris Doctor degree; Licensed and in good standing with any state bar. Strong educational background. Experience managing attorneys and mentoring others.
