Position Overview - Provide support for the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Office of the Armed Forces Medical Examiner (OAFME) mass casualty investigation/processing facility located at the Charles C. Carson Center for Mortuary Affairs, Dover Air Force Base, Dover, DE. As a radiologic technologist, perform diagnostic imaging examinations and a range of associated support tas! ks during autopsies and/or external body examinations and insp! ections, in support of forensic medical operations.
Job Responsibilities:
Performance Hours
- Established by the Government supervisor and based on the number and arrival times of human remains.
- Workday and duty hours may vary and require frequent schedule adjustments on short notice such as 48 hours.
- Variable daily schedule, but the total hours worked per week shall be 40 or less.
- Due to the unpredictability of the workload, workday may be Monday through Sunday and the start and stop times for each day may vary from 0700-2000 hours.
- Overtime authorized with prior approval.
- Provide Radiologic Technological support at the Charles C. Carson Mortuary Center for Mortuary Affairs.
- Perform difficult full body post mortem radiographic examinations on the remains for the purpose of medical/legal investigations and routine autopsies.
- Receives re! mains, logs receipt and assists with positioning for optimal imaging.
- Operate the computerized equipment to take the images.
- Work with the radiologist reviewing the images to determine the need for additional images.
- Ensure availability of proper materials and supplies.
- Maintain detailed records of examinations.
- Ensure the cleanliness and sanitation of the radiograph area.
- Must be able to work on their feet for long periods and must be able to lift and move patients who need assistance.
- Meet the variable work schedule 90% of the time.
- Obtain an acceptable diagnostic image as determined by a radiologist to interpret.
- Produce images of high diagnostic quality with a minimal retakes.
- Graduate of a formal training program in radiography that leads to a certificate, an associate's degree, or a bachelor's degree.
- Must possess the appropriate! certification and credentials as a radiologic technologist as required! by the State of Delaware.
- Minimum of 3-5 years work experience as radiology technologist required.
- CT, MRI experience highly desired.
- Prior military service or work experience in military medical/dental treatment facilities preferred.
- Possess knowledge of radiographic exposure techniques including the use of a formula to determine technical factors, bow to control density, contrast, and distortion, and use of accessories.
- Possess a thorough knowledge of radiation safety, to include concepts of accumulated dosage and genetic changes; effects of radiation on living organism and on patient and operator exposed in order to maintain adequate safeguards.
- Possess a knowledge of anatomy and physiology such as location appearance, and function of various major systems to include muscular, circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive and urinary; understanding of the functioning and interrelationship of various organs, to judge! acceptability of the radiograph for diagnostic use; knowledge of effects of common medical and surgical diseases in order to assure that radiographic studies properly illustrate the condition.
- Possess knowledge of basic physics to include concepts of energy, electric power and types of electrical circuits, and properties of radiology in order to understand radiology equipment operation.
- Possess the ability to make minor changes to standard procedures to compensate for equipment aging, and determine the equipment maintenance or repair schedule.
- Possess knowledge and skill in positioning of human remains for a wide variety of views to produce the best possible images.
- Possess knowledge of basic clinical/nursing practices related to radiography including emergency cardiac arrest procedures, principles of various types of injections, and sterile operating room practices.
- Must possess emotional stability and must demonstrate a mature! and respectful approach, which recognizes the dignity of human remains! .
- Have or willing to receive Anthrax and smallpox vaccinations.
- Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines and follow all appropriate protective measures; i.e., wear personal protective equipment (eye protection, surgical masks, etc,), and use appropriate shielding to protect against radiation.
- A signed statement of non-disclosure of confidential and sensitive case information may be required.
- Comply with all Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) policies and guidelines.
